Between Travel, Encounters, and Boundary-Pushing Experiences

Since the age of 20, I have been on the road — with a backpack, often hitchhiking, and always open to the unknown. My travels have taken me through North and Central America, Asia, Australia, India, the Middle East, Europe, and Russia.

The encounters and experiences along the way have shaped who I am. They tell stories of war and displacement, of personal challenges and fate — but also of love and hope.

All of this finds its way into my songs and into my book.

A life in songs and words.

I set out. Again and again. With nothing but a backpack, a thumb held out, and the sense that the world is bigger than anything I know about it.
Roads stretch out beneath me, borders blur, languages dissolve into glances, gestures, silence. And somewhere in between, the stories begin.
Not loudly. Never loudly.
They sit across from me in dusty buses, sharing bread, or simply a moment.
They tell of nights when everything was lost.
Of paths that no longer know which way to go. Of war. Of flight.
And then—almost imperceptibly—of what remains despite it all:
a hand that won’t let go. A smile at the wrong moment. Hope that needs no reason.
I collect nothing. I hold on to nothing. But something remains.
It settles between the ribs, in the pauses between two thoughts,
where words haven’t yet decided if they want to be spoken.
And eventually they become songs. Lyrics.
Fragments of something that can’t be explained.
I don’t write to answer. I write because there is something that wants to be heard.
Quietly. Unobtrusively. Persistently.
My language leaves out what doesn’t need to be said.
My music leaves room for what happens between the notes.
And perhaps that is exactly where something touches.
Not completely. Not definitively.
But close enough to stay.

With this book, I have finally done so and fulfilled the promise I made to many.
It describes my search for meaning in life and truth in faith, and explores whether there is a church that acts and teaches on earth with God’s authority.

In my younger years, I spent a long time traveling with a backpack. Alaska, Canada, the USA, Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Southeast Asia, Australia, the Philippines, Russia—many countries, many different people and cultures. I experienced and learned so much along the way. Some of it I wrote down, and it is now finding its way into a book I call Travel Snippets.
